Full Circle

Sometimes God brings us full circle so we’ll remember how far He has brought us.

Every once in a while, I’ll feel like I’ve “come full circle.” In other words, I’m right back where I started- having grown since the last time I was here-but God has redeemed what was taken and restored it to me as a precious gift.

Gilgal means “circle.” It’s significant.

Gilgal is the place where the Israelites landed after they crossed the Jordan River and entered the Promised Land. Gilgal is also where their ancestors had camped while the men of the tribes went out to fight battles for the Promised Land. The nation of Israel comes full circle when they all return to Gilgal.

According to Beth Moore’s Believing God study, “It was at Gilgal, where after forty years of wandering in the wilderness, the children of Israel renewed their covenant with God, subjected themselves to the rite of circumcision, and prepared their hearts for a fresh chapter of history. God presented the Israelites with a major do-over, and this time they did it right.”

Joshua 5:9-10 says, “Then the Lord said to Joshua, ‘Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.’ So the place has been called Gilgal to this day. On the evening of the fourteenth day of the month, while camped at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho, the Israelites celebrated the Passover.

My life has come full circle in a way this week, and I, too, am celebrating. Sometimes we put ourselves in a cycle of defeats by our own choices. Aren’t you glad that in those times, God is a God of second (and third, and fourth…) chances?! And sometimes we are taken from some place by circumstances beyond our control and our God in his goodness brings us back full circle.

Several years ago, I was forced to leave a “job” (more like passion/ministry/calling) that I loved and had served for nearly a decade. I had been raped by a supervisor and when I finally found the courage to have a voice and speak out, I was told “it was my word against theirs.” In an instant, the job that I knew God has specifically gifted me for and given me for so many years was ripped away and I was left wandering in the wilderness. I have had several jobs- many of them fulfilling ones- since then, but I have always known that specific ministry was what God had called me to do. And just this week, God called me back to Gilgal. After years of wandering in the wilderness of the career world, I have been given the opportunity to take the same type of position in the same type of ministry that I was in years ago. Full circle. God is redeeming the time, making all things new. Reproach has been rolled away. Hallelujah!

Are you waiting for God to bring something back around full circle? Trust that He’s working even while you’re wandering and wondering. He has not forgotten about you or the passions He placed deep within you. Your Gilgal awaits.
